2006 CE (common era). BC and AD were changed to "Before Common Era (BCE) and CE. They're based on the same numbering, so many people argue that it's just a dumb PC way of saying BC and AD.
More importantly, perhaps, is that 1 AD was most likely NOT the birth date of Jesus (http://www.aloha.net/~mikesch/year.htm). He was most likely born around 5 AD. Remember measurement tools weren't quite as accurate back then. At the end of the day it's just about standardization. Jesus was also probably born in the summer, not December. But that date fit with the holidays of other religious at the time Christanity was spreading. It's always been about what's easiest...

I think we should do away with all calendrical systems thus far proposed, and start over with the year one, beginning NOW, beginning with the asking of the most stupendously penetratnig question ever thrown in the face of non-believers. As an atheist, I am struck dumb by the strength of your argument: IF I do not believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, THEN I must be yearless.
Actually, no. Let's start with the year 100, because your question was 100% awesome. Happy New Year 100 AS*!

Most atheists just use the same year that most other people use - as you know perfectly WELL!!
But you should realise that it's NOT just atheists who don't believe in your religion! And it's not just atheists who have different systems of counting the year, and different new year's days!!
Surely even YOU know that the Chinese new year is not the same as yours? And you probably also know that they have a different system for counting years than yours!! But that doesn't make them atheists!!
Here in Japan people often use 2006 to describe this year, but there is a different way too - exclusive to Japanese people! This is the 18th year of the Heisei reign (that's 'Emperor Akihito' to you,) å¹³æ18å¹´. And Japanese people can't easily be described as atheists either! Especially as they usually belong to at least 2 different religions...!!

its 2006 because you still need some reference point and if the whole world is calling it 2006 then its 2006.

Many people use the initials CE for Common Era instead of AD anymore.
You might ask the same question about Jews, Buddhists, Muslims etc etc etc. Most of the world is not Christian.

What year is it for everyone who isn't Christian. Just because you have to submit to a convention, doesn't mean you have to believe the basis of that convention.
