The bun makers know that you want to eat a few of the hot dogs without a bun. They leave out two of the buns as a service to the consumer.

It's all a marketing scam in my opinion. Since hot dogs come in packages of 8, the makers of hot dog buns decided to sell them in packages of 6. This way you always have two left over hot dogs and need more buns. Thats just my opinion though.

Why 2 more hot dogs than buns? This is to account for...

1) the unfortunate hot dog(s) that gets burned due to neglect. Grilling (assuming you are grilling here) usually means a party or some festive occasssion where grill chefs are prone to distraction.

2) the hot dog that an overzealous guest decides to "taste test" before serving. This way, one or two can be eaten withouth adversely affecting the bun-to-hot dog ratio

3) consistency. Hot dogs are the males to the female bun. And at any party, the male-to-female ratio should always favor the ladies!

It's a conspiracy to make you buy 8 packages of buns and 6 packs of hot dogs.

Usually there are 8 buns to a pack, but 10 hot dogs to a pack--so in other words, you would need to buy an extra pack of buns.

Some of the jumbo hot dogs come 8 to a pack--which is good--at least each will get a bun. :)

it is all a merchandising rip-off in my opinion. in view that warm canines are available in applications of 8, the makers of warm canines buns desperate to sell them in applications of 6. this way you generally have 2 left over warm canines and want greater buns. Thats basically my opinion although.
