It distances you from the reality of it all . He/she goes away, you get undressed and climb up on the table. You can close your eyes. When the doc and attendant come back you can pretend no one is really there. He leaves, you get dressed. It never happened.

It's a professional courtesy. How many people feel comfortable taking their clothes off in front of someone? The process may seem a little awkward as you reveal more and more. Better to be prepared and ready and not have to share the process of getting to that point; it's not part of the exam anyway.

That is part of the bed side manors course believe it or not. However, I don't know your age but if you remember years ago there was no assistant in patient rooms during such exams but in this day and age there have been so many sexual harassment accusations against Drs they will not allow themselves to be left alone in rooms with patients unless it's a lifelong patient or someone they totally trust.

There are two reasons:

1) To be respectful to the patient and not make them feel any more uncomfortable then you already feel. It's uncomfortable to have to spread your legs open in front of them so why make it worse by getting completely naked in front of them? They do this also to be professional.

2) Believe it or not they are also with another patient. Doctors often see two patients during the same time period. When the doctor leaves your room, they are checking on the other patient.

What do you think they would do or where would they look while you're getting undressed? Hide their face in the corner? They go out to answer the phone, write notes etc etc

Common courtesy. Plus, watching somebody get undressed would not be a "clinical" act

The act of undressing can be viewed as sexual and the act of gynocology medicine is for your health and not to be confused with the first. It is also professional because of this thinking.

They are trying to maintain a certain degree of professionalism - and are trying to allow you a certain degree of dignity in your visit. They realize that it is never comfortable having a 'stranger' examine your body, so they are trying to show that they respect your privacy, and are simply doing the task at hand.

Hope this helps!
