Because people perceive money as power, especially in America. Money can buy almost anything: OJ Simpson bought freedom; corporations buy politicians, who influence law; and people buy silence, by paying someone to keep his mouth shut. Hollywood also influences people's greed by portraying greed as cool - "Get Rich or Die Tryin'". People want to HAVE, rather than BE. It's terribly unfortunate, and it will only get worse.

I think in a lot of cases ppl are just really insecure about themselves. They think "well if I have money I'll be popular" or "if I have money I can buy all this stuff that that guy over there doesn't have". The most common one is that money=happiness. I'm not quite sure how that works, but a lot of ppl seem to go by it anyway.
The main thing is, super greedy ppl wanna be better than everyone else. So instead of trying to make themselves better by making the world a better place, they just collect as much money as possible. It's pretty stupid and doesn't work, but they do it anyway.

well, there are many different reasons. i don't know all of them, but i do know some. lets say your best friend just got something really expensive for no reason, and you had wanted that thing for a long time. that might make you greedy of the fact that he/she seems to get whatever he/she wants, or even jealous.
another reason could be that someone has the looks, and you may not be all that good looking. you might be greedy about that fact.
all in all it just depends on the reason, but i sure wish there was no such thing as greed.
