It depends on what type of riding you're going to do. Wether you want a cruiser, crotch rocket, touring bike, chopper, etc. The Harley sportster is a good bike to learn on, but don't buy it new because you will rapidly outgrow it. You should be able to find a decent used one for $4,000 - $5,000.

I'm doing the exact same thing and in my constant research (want tdo it right the first time) I've found most people have recommended the Honda Shadow for a newbie. So I, of course, researched that particualr bike for hours and agreed. Though I'm considering something over a 750 due to the fact that I would like to have a passenger at some point in the future. something in the same category but stronger as far as performance would be the Shadow VLX Deluxe or the Shadow Spirit 750. They're the top 2 I'll be choosing from! They are lighter than some bikes but not too low to the ground, which for me being all legs is perfect. It's just too bad they don't come in hot pink......

Time and time again, the motorcycle mags recommend the Kawasaki Ninja 500 as an an excellent first bike. It's light, so it's easy to learn to maneuver, has a decent amount of power so you won't outgrow it quickly (but not so much power that you'll get into trouble), and doesn't have lots of plastic on it. Odds are that the bike will get dropped, so less plastic means less expensive to repair. A good used one should be available for about $2,000.

The Suzuki GS 500 bikes are good first motorcycles and you can get a used one for pretty cheap.

You shouldn't spend more than $2,500.00. As sad as it is, beginners often drop and damage their bikes, therefore you don't want to invest too much money in it. Try to lean towards an older bike that's no more than 500cc and that's mechanically safe. You should also consider learning to ride on a dirt bike before taking on a street motorcycle. Dirt bikes are safer and you can drop them as much as you want without causing much damage! Good luck and welcome to the brotherhood!

Depends on how big you are... I learned on a $2000 Honda Nighthawk CB750. Snappy so it's still fun after you've learned, forgiving while you're learning, and a nice cross between sport bike and crusier... plus they're pretty easy to find, and even easier to repair. Suzuki GS500 is also really nice if you're shorter and lighter.

buy u a used honda shadow something like a vlx600 dont buy it new because you will inevitably drop it these have low seat heights about 26" so they are easy to control, plus they are not very heavy 450lbs. if you go to small say a 250 you are going to want a bigger bike in a week once you start to get the hang of it. smaller bikes are very light and get blown around easily( not fun)

Under 3k for sure. Get a used Honda CBR....really nice bikes.
If you have money, then get a yamaha yzf...they are soo good looking, but they're more like 6 or 7 grand.

i wouldn't recommend anything bigger than a 600 for your first bike you should be able to find a clean pre-owned bike for 3000-3500 and make sure the bike fits you...good rule don't buy something so heavy that if it fell over you couldn't pick it up by your self

Expect to spend a couple of grand at least. Go to bike dealers and sit on them. See how they feel.
