It takes an average of 18-24 hours for a meal to be fully digested and move into the large intestine as the waste that cannot be digested, which becomes feces. The more one eats, the more one has to get rid of in the bowel movement. It also depends what you eat. Foods high in fiber, like fruits, vegetables, and whole wheats, have a lot of components that are not digested and move right through the digestive system. The large intestine is about 6 feet in length, so it has the capacity to store a lot of stuff. However, feces cannot be stored for very long times. When fecal matter has moved into the sigmoid colon an rectum, the pressure increases and receptors in the rectum fire to the brain to tell other rectal muscles to contract and have a bowel movement. Bowel movements with a week or more between indicates a slow digestive tract and possible backup of compacted fecal matter that is almost stuck to large intestine. Laxatives or possible mechanical methods can be used to fix this.

I'm not sure what a boul movement is. Some people have different digestive systems and do not have bowel movements everyday. Eat more fiber (veggies) and it'll come out more.

It is complicated. The most likely thing causing this is the fact that you either A) do not eat enough or B) eat foods that you need. Your bowel movements are the food that you couldn't break down, didn't have the time to break down or chose not to break down. Foods such as fiber help move the movements along. If you eat only healthy foods and/or undereat, you will not have the movements often because you have nothing to get rid of.

Well it depends, if your eating less food, your metabolism slows down (and bowl movements are part of metabolism). If your not getting enough fiber, movement through the intestines is slower. Also drinking plently of water helps move things through. If you have irregular eating patterns, digestion is altered. Basically it's your metabolism. Everybody has different metabolisms.

When your body is plenished, the excess deposits (or waste) is discarded by the means of a movement.
However, if your body is lacking nourishment, it will use every last mineral, protein, etc. There won't be a movement then.

Hi Dena S,
There are many people who are that way. Some people go every day, others twice or three times a week. If your worried about it check with your doctor or you can call " Dial-A-Nurse " in your area. You might also go to http://www.webmd.com/. Blueladybug

Everyone is different, but I say not enough water to drink and not enough fiber. Eat wheat bread, brown rice, vegies, fruits.
