I did the mule ride many years ago and it remains THE most exciting thing I have ever done. But, I had to make reservations 6 or 7 months in advance and then go on a day when they had a spot. It is a popular ride. I did the overnight one; stayed at the Phantom Ranch overnight.

For the day or overnight ride you have to be ready to go at about 7:00 AM. So the only way you can get on last minute will probably be if someone cancels or does not show. So you would need to be at the start point, as I recall the Bright Angel Transportation Desk (I thinks its in the El Tovar Hotel) and be ready to take a vacant spot if one comes up. AND, you may not be the only one waiting.

This is from the mule ride reservation site:

"If you do not make reservations at least 6 to 8 months in advance, it is less likely that you will be able to secure a trip on the Mule Ride. To check on Mule Ride availability, please call: 1-888-297-2757."

You don't. Those things are booked YEARS in advance. If you have one day you don't want to spend the whole thing doing a mule ride anyway. It's hot as a demon at the bottom of the canyon this time of year. Drive along to the different stop points and enjoy the views. There are overlook description signs, rangers with info, all sorts of stuff. You can have a very successful canyon trip without a mule ride.
