I don't understand why some states are so heavily populated. Why don't more companies start locating in states such as wyoming instead of california.

Mass migration of skilled people and businesses are well under way. The California cost of housing and services is very high. Many companies have already relocated to Utah, and more to the American midwest. So much so, that the state is becoming alarmed. Crime, pollution, urban-sprawl, and the difficutly of finding people to take lower paying jobs are added facters.
Low wage workers have had to find housing further and further away from major cities, they are reaching a geographicval limit for the time commuting to work. Some service jobs have been exported to low wage countries like India. Manufacturing jobs are fleeing to China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Latin America, etc., throwing Americans out of work and forcing them to move to lower cost regions of the country.
