The above answers are all good, and maybe right...I don't know. Here is a different perspective on your question.I think they have thumb throttles because the quads were originally made by the same companies that made snow mobiles and that is how they operate.

Because four-wheelers are off-road only. Motorcycles are designed as on-road vehicles and off-road. In order to ride in traffic, you need the precise throttle control the twist-grip gives.
I have seen a rider with a missing arm who had a foot throttle, and another with a missing hand who used a "rocker lever" on his throttle. Both worked tolerably well.

I've wondered that myself Stephaine, Jet Skis have the thumb throttle too.I honestly don't know and to me it really doesn't make a diff. I think the answer of the manf of snowmobiles is probably most correct. Maybe the desingers wanted to tuck the throttle inside and underneath of the grip to protect it from trees and debris to prevent accidently hitting it and damaging it?? I like the twist grip myself.

you turn a dirt bike as much as you would a quad. 4 wheelers have thumb throttles because they're stupid. old men and stupid kids will leave a twist throttle pinned while they're trying to brake. if i had a quad i'd replace it with a twist throttle

With a four-wheeler you are actually turning the wheels alot more whereas on a bike, you lean to turn... kinda hard to twist throttle and turn real hard.

cause you can get hung up under a quad, and have the throttle stick open. Won't happen on a bike. You can modify if you have to, but it's easier to just learn how to use it.

because 4 wheelers are on rough terrain and a thumb throttle is safer
