It fits in well with the "hero" archetype, the character is able to overcome adversity at an early age. Also, if there's no or limited parental influence, the kid can run off and do what he/she wants... it answers the question of how they can get away with it without their parents pulling on the reigns.

There's no story to go along with someone from a traditional family.
What would be interesting about that kid's life? No, we have to have the kid who was raised by a bear in the jungle or the poor elephant whose mother was locked away - Lady and the Tramp's bastard children. Those are stories, man.

Almost 50% of the country contains families like those on the Disney Channel anyway... mostly divorced. Maybe it's a comfort to kids to know thats it's okay.

Unfortunately, most of America's kids come from "broken" families. Like me for instance. Given how many kids do not come from complete families, and given how many kids have to/choose to turn to media for answers, it's a way to show kids through media that they are not the only ones who may be raised by an aunt, evil step mother or 7 dwarf men.

Disney didn't like the concept of their characters having sex to have kids, so early on the made everyone live with an uncle or who ever
