Do you think English speaking Americans are fed up with the influx of immigrants and their inability to communicate with english speaking Americans?

Isn't it a personal choice? And anyway, If a person (immigrant or citizen) cannot communicate in the most common language of the country he resides in, who's at loss? Then why does one (who can communicate) make such a big deal if other person cannot communicate in national language (unless earlier is providing services to later).

The argument about immigration is not as much about a common language as it is about legal v/s illegal status.

That said, immigrants (as well as citizens) have to accept & respect the culture & values of the country where they (with personal choice of their own) decide to reside (legally as well as illegally). And in my opinon that includes the national LANGUAGE as well.
No question about it.

Interesting question!

When traveling to a foreign country, it is always considered a taboo to not be able to speak at least a few key phrases in the national language. A person who moves to a new country would be insane to move without having a working vocabulary in the native language.

So look up the United States in any encycolpedia. Under national language, you will find "None." We do not have a federal language, so how can we expect someone to feel they need to know a specific language? Right now, there are pretty much as many native Spanish speakers in the U.S. as there are English speakers -- and most English speakers cannot speak or write correct English if they try!

Perhaps instead of being upset with immigrants who move here without knowing English, we should consider making English the national language. Then we can require everyone to speak it. And we could be upset when they don't. We could also end the requirement that tax forms and every other government document be available in dozens of languages.

But until that happens, why should they?

OF course they should learn English; is making it a requirement going ot make the language any easier to learn? And why is this such an issue? Many immigrants kids I knew could speak better English than their parents or grandparents and it will be the same with the recent immigrants.

I believe if you move to an English speaking country you should learn to communicate with the people there, at least basically. That's my opinion. But I think people need to be more patient with immigrants- it's hard to throw yourself into a completely different culture, let alone when you don't speak the language. it might take a while.

Should immigrants be required to learn the English language? My answer to your question is a big fat YES! Why, because they are in the united states of America, and they should learn how to learn our language. We are not invading their country as they did to ours so, they should learn and speak the English language.

Yes, definitely in public places and if they are working at a place that requires communications in English. There is nothing wrong in keeping ones mother tongue or customs and people should be encouraged to retain it at home for its the diversity of our country that makes up the rich fabric of our nation. But English is the universal language for trades and commerces and should be learnt.

thats a stupid question cause look how many english persons are trying to learn a different language. how would you feel if you were an immigrant and living in another country and because you do not know there language you have to learn their language. so before we english people criticise lets put our selves in their position and how would we react. and some of these people sometime know things we would like to know to dont hate, celebrate

Yes.

Not only would it show a respect for the immigrants new country of choice but it would be an indication of his/her willingness/desire to fit in. It would greatly facilitate communication and reduce the fear/anger/mistrust factor that natural born Americans have for foreign speaking peoples in general.

How would you feel if someone was given privilege to stay in your home but refused to do chores, cut grass, clean the shower after using it, etc. They want a better life but needs to earn it. I personally don't believe that learning the language of a country who is by the way #1 it's a bad thing. This is what needs to be done to have a better life.
