As you know, computer is just a machine. It knows only machine language which we don't know to speak or use ;) So simply, booting means, loading the Operating System in to the computer's memory so that after loading, it know what to do if we press the mouse button...it know what to do if we press any keys in the keyboard... it know what to do if we double click somewhere over any icons etc.
So booting is a process of loading the Operating System (whatever you use - windows, linux, macos, dos...) in to the computer's main memory. This operating system is the mediator between the computer hardware and the computer user.

There's two types of booting:
1. cold boot - When the computer is first turned on, it goes through a process in order to load the operating system onto your screen (In most cases, it's Windows XP)
2. warm boot - If the computer was already on, but you restarted it. That means it's rebooting.

In computing, booting is a bootstrapping process that starts operating systems when the user turns on a computer system. A boot sequence is the set of operations the computer performs when it is switched on which load an operating system.

To "boot" the computer means, basically, to start it up. If you have a "dual-booting" computer, it means it can start up using one of two different operating systems (i.e. the new intel Macs can dual boot into Windows and Mac OS).

It means that you can kick someone out of a room. Like on Yahoo games, if you are the head of the table you can boot others out that are making you mad or are making rude remarks or if you just simple don't want to play with them.

Booting is the process of starting up your computer. The phrase comes from "pick yourself up by your bootstraps." This is different from starting an application, which is called launching.
