apresocratic,
Rawk on, man! I want what you're on...
Adrian,
Yes, there are barriers in the U.S. government that are slowing the transition down. However, keep in mind that big Oil companies are actually evolving into big Energy companies, buying into whatever will lead our future markets. Everyone knows Oil is a time bomb waiting to go off and die out. There's no reason not to encourage alternative fuel sources.
At the same time, we'll never be 100% off of foreign oil before it's gone, but that doesn't mean we can't get consumption down to a respectable number so that fluctuations in price stop having an immediate impact on our economy.

No. Not for a long long time. For those of you who are quick to jump on alternative fuels, exactly how do you propose to put the infrastructure in place? Exactly how quickly do you think hydrogen stations can be built on every other street corner? How quickly do you think it would take to replace the millions upon millions of petroleum-fueled automobiles in the U.S.?
If it's going to happen, it will be very gradually.

yes, the us has engines that can run operate on water and used cooking oil from fast food joints. ,Rubbing alcohol and fuel made from corn will work too. but they are not going to turn down making us citizens pay $3 per gallon for gas.

Oh yes. We 'could' be completely independent in less than a decade if big oil didn't have a choke hold on our government.

I read somewhere that we have, like, a trillion gallons of oil waiting to be tapped on federal land in Colorado.

Hopefully, one day yes. That would be so great, all the third world countries would go back to the stone age were they belong!
