It seems to me as if the askers lack some basic English skills. Why is this such an epidemic in the USA? Why are slang and abbreviations quickly taking over the language arts?

Haha! Look at all these people who are answering my question, and look at the pathetic excuse for writing they use, and their pitiful lack of a coherent argument! All I wanted was a feasible answer to my question, not a bunch of garbage about people from foreign countries. I think that if they are moving to America, they ought to learn English, just like if I was moving to Mexico, I'd learn spanish.

"If you instant-messaged or text-messaged with children or teens you would know the answer. "
For the record, I am fifteen years old.

First of all, some of us are not American. Furthermore, this is an informal forum where many people ask questions who are not adults. You do not know how old the people are or where they come from.
I also think that we as a web culture use abbreviations often and this is commonly accepted. LOL To say that slang and abbreviations are overtaking the language arts simply because you see grammar and spelling errors here on a place where most people just come to have fun is a gross overgenerlisation.
This is not an online composition class. It is an open forum where many questions are bad ones, where people are racist and sexist, where people game for points and often do not even ask a question. But there are also good questions too.
And by the way, we do not ask questions with grammar. We use grammar to structure our language when we write and inform others of tense and other important information.

If you instant-messaged or text-messaged with children or teens you would know the answer. Etiquette, grammar, and correct spelling are not required to effectively communicate in these forums. It is typically most convenient to use slang and abbreviations when you are communicating with a "keyboard" in a quick manner, i.e. IM or TM.
This form of quick communication has pervaded Internet forums such as Yahoo Answers because of its familiarity, the fact that there is no penalty for practicing it, and because many of the Yahoo Answer users are young.

Internet is the reason why slang and abbreviations (some that don't even make sense) are being used.
Chatting and internet as a whole is developing its own english. It is not only a US phenomenon, but a world wide one.
Btw all the people who ask questions but lack basic english skills are from US. If you click on a non english speaking country, you will realize that they are not from US (usually, atleast).

It is sloppy habits and carelessness and "cool' to use word abbreviations. Its counterpart may be seen among CB radio users such as truckers, who use a kind of shorthand lingo to communicate, where such terms as "bear" might refer to police. The police use their own form of abbreviated lingo for radio communications. But these are professional applications. It is a different story when you have teenagers communicating in a language that is almost foreign and hard for the average person to decipher. The drawback to all of this, especially among teenagers, is that if proper grammar and spelling is tossed out the window it becomes more and more difficult to enter mainstream conversation and to communicate in terms anyone else can understand. It may seem "cool" to them now but it will look terrible on a resume.

It can be seen in all aspects of daily life. As our technology gets better we are required to retain less traditional information and focus more on the current lingo. In the scheme of things, we use Text messages on cell phones, we are an Internet savvy group with increasing demands of our time, and even on Wall Street abbreviations make things much easier. Our society is demanding less of an accurate display of proper English, and more of an understanding of basic slang and abbreviations.

you do not desire capital letters for nationwide criteria. Successive governments have interfered to such an volume that instructors have not been in a position to teach. it really is probable worse than you imagine. I watched a BBC programme a week in the past and that they had a transferring banner entering into the approach the exhibit with the verb preparation spelled as preparation. If the BBC are employing the ignorant, we are quite in worry.

I think that, for some reason, Yahoo answers has attracted a certain cut of society. The more educated people are either answering only, or seeking help with professionals. Would you seriously trust the people here with some of your questions? I know that I would most likely ask someone who can help me, and whom I can trust. You should see the answers I received for my one and only question!
In addition, the older generation are not so computer savvy, are afraid of the internet, and have better things to do with their time, leaving us with the younger generation of can't-care-less teenagers with a language of their own.... It also seems to me that we have attracted a group of sex-addicted, sex-ignorant youths. Go figure!

I agree with Mr. Brain. In addition, more emphasis is being placed on technology in the schools, even the elementary schools. Teachers are being pressured to make sure that their students spend more time working on the computer, and thus are unable to devote as much time to teaching the basics of grammar as they used to. Another casualty of increased computer time is the teaching of legible handwriting.

i completely agree. Look at the answer box, it has a built in spell checker!! Kids are apparently too lazy to learn spelling, grammar, or typing. its only a matter time before that style ends up in a report or a book.
it is simply the sign of a lazy person.

Thank you! I wonder the same thing and it drives me crazy. Young people today are seemingly so concerned with their bodies/sex and can memorize trash and Top 40 songs but cant write or spell..... and their mommy's probably still wash their underwear for God's sake ! My point being, they think theyre SO grown. Education is very important. It is natural to be curious about sex but there are ways to go about it without being vulgar and talking trash. Please educate yourself, you will be a better person for it in the long run.
