Without more information, that is comparing apples to oranges.

Square feet is a measure of area. Cubic yards is a measure of volume. Because you are asking in a landscaping forum, you are probably referring to... I dunno... groundcover or something? Without more context, I could guess something like this:

There are 9 square feet in a square yard (3x3). Whatever you have that is measuring in square feet is probably assuming some depth. 1 inch maybe? If so, then (if you want to look at it this way) you'd need to "stack up" 36 of those square yards to fill a cubic yard (since there are 36 inches in a yard). So if we assume the square foot measurement is assuming one inch of depth you would need 9 x 36 square feet to fill a cubic yard, or 324 square feet.

If it turns out 1 inch is a bad guess, you need to recalculate of course. And notably, all the people answering 27 almost can't be right, because there are 27 *cubic* feet in a cubic yard, and you asked about square feet.

Cubic is both geometric and algebraic. You are working in 3-dimension. Your answer = 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Square is 2-dimension and does not apply.

1 cubic yard = (1 yd or 3 ft)(1 yd or 3 ft)(1 yd or 3 ft) = 27 cubic feet

Hope that helps!

27 is correct if you are asking for cubic ft in a cubic yard. For sq. ft. it depends on how deep the product is being spread. If you are talking about 1 yard of top soil or soil pep, 1 cu yrd of top soil spread 2" deep will cover 160 sq. ft. If you spread it 4" deep, it will cover 80 sq. ft.

You can't multiply square feet with cubic feet . There are 27 cubic feet to a cubic yard. Or there are 9 square feet to a square yard.

Wouldn't it just be 9 since you aren't including the third axis, as that would result in 'cubic feet' and you asked for "square feet"?
