According to most school syllabuses, the Milky Way solar system has all of nine planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (often remembered by a mnemonic device). However, recent research is showing that Pluto may not be a planet at all (see source) and there may in fact be more than nine planets in our solar system. However, getting this through to the school system might be all but impossible.
As for the sun, Hydrogen makes up 74 odd % and Helium makes up 24 off %, with other inert and minute traces filling up the rest of the exploding gas ball.
Mars, as a planet has no atmosphere, thus any life sustained there would have to produce their own gases to breathe (be it oxygen or otherwise) and be self sustaining enough that they could feed themselves and procreate. Chances are incredibly unlikely to the point of being impossible.

1. 9 planets a 10th was just found however research is still being done to asscertain this.
2. The Sun is made of Hydrogen and Helium gases
3. No life on mars is not possible due to the fact that it has a non existant atmosphere. very minimal carbon dioxide so you won't be able to put trees there and hope to terraform it.
