The first true towns are sometimes considered to be large settlements where the inhabitants were no longer simply farmers of the surrounding area, but began to take on specialized occupations, and where trade, food storage and power was centralized. Societies that live in cities are often called civilizations.
A city is an urban area that is differentiated from a town, village, or hamlet by size, population density, importance, or legal status. In most parts of the world, cities are generally substantial and nearly always have an urban core.
A city usually consists of residential, industrial and business areas together with administrative functions which may relate to a wider geographical area. A large share of a city's area is primarily taken up by housing, which is then supported by infrastructure such as roads, streets and often public transport routes such as a rapid transit system. Lakes and rivers may be the only undeveloped areas within the city.
"The city is a human habitat that allows people to form relations with others at various levels of intimacy while remaining entirely anonymous."

Cities exist because its more convinient to be in close proximity with other people, which allows for greater speciallization and industrialization. The rise of the urban population is what led to the end of the European Dark Ages (among other things). Cities have also given rise to some pretty nasty germs, as with all those people living together, disease is spread more easily.

The concept of cities has been around for thousands of years. They started as places to meet and exchanges goods,ie.markets.Some people found that if they stayed at these places year round that more income could be made. So shops were setup, these grew into stores.More people stayed in the area, so hotels started to form.So more type of stores formed to bring even more people to these areas. Soon cities were born.

Cities exist for the Mailing purposes, because sooner or later number get too long and run out. That is why they created zip codes and area codes, to designate people and places. If were just one big state, then you have too much for the mail system to deal with. Basically for convenience.

A person or persons choose to settle in a geographic location because of it's resources -- be it water, crops or metals. Soon, others follow and settle there also. Things get built over time to support the resource development, those who've settled there, and for recreational purposes. Before you know it, you've got a city on your hands.

Cities exist due to industrialization. The are where major factories and major locations for jobs are available is where people will go to work and live there. Thus cities are created. More people them other consumer stores go closer to the people and build in the cities. Cities are a place where opportunities for pay are high. Cities exist because people want money and money is given to the people by their employers who work for big companies. So the people have to go closer to the big companies and have to live there to get constant pay. More and more people come and more consumer stores follow.

Cities allow for the specialization of labor. If everyone lived independent of everyone else, we would all need to be farmers or hunter gatherers. The bigger the city, the more specialized individuals in it can become.
For example, if your primary talent was making table lamps from soda cans, you would need to live somewhere that you could get a steady supply of soda cans and light bulbs and where there are people willing to trade something (like food or clothing) for your lamps. i.e. a city.

They exsist so it is easier to govern small areas that is why there are mayors. They also help to establish there own personal judcial systems. If everyone had to go through a national 911 service and national court nothing would get done! This exsists for the purpose of governing.

They exist, because man is a social being and it was the natural evolution from the primal huts and tribes. Later on, other reasons made cities essential as they were built around the consecrated liders of that particular "tribe" to establish better protection from others (union makes strength), obvious commercial purposes and making food distribution easier and faster and to establish realms and separate man across from what could easily be their brothers in ancestry terms, into competitors. Ultimate, cities are man's step into the concept of nations and just step up from the concept of families.
