It really depends on how far long you were. I was 3 1/2 months pregnant and I was told that I would just pass it through, meaning no D&C. But if you're farther long or bleeding alot, you will need a D&C, it "cleans" you out. Some women even get a D&C after they give birth. It's really common.

a miscarriage is a very difficult time for both the woman and any partner or prospective grand parents and no matter how far pregnant you were you will need time to grieve and come to terms with your loss and the loss of plans you may have made.
You may feel guilty and think that you have done something wrong or you may have felt shocked and confused when you found out youwere pregnant however it is very unlikley that anything you did or said has resulted in a loss. When i lost my baby i was 12 weeks pregnant i went to the toilet and discovered that i was bleeding, i went to my GP who explained that bleeding can be normal in pregnancy however i was sent for a scan to establish if there was any cause. At the scan i was informed that my baby had died and had not come away from the womb ( incomplete abortion is the technical name but i am not keen on this term) i was booked in for a D& C operation the next day and was very scared, a D& C is carried out under general anesthetic and the process involves emptying the womb, its a routine operation and does not take too long, it is usually day surgery and you will be sent home to rest after.
I lost my first baby 6 years ago and after years of trying and convincing myself that i would never have kids i now have 2 boys one 18 months and 1 8 months, so a miscarriage does notmean that you will never have babies.
When you lose a baby before 26 weeks there is no funeral as the birth can not be registered as the fetus is considerd none viable (would not have survived outside the womb) this can make it difficukt to greive, i have a rose in my garden with beautiful red flowers wich is my memorial to my baby its nice as my eldest son water it with me and enjoys talking to it. Hope this helps

A D&C means Dialation and Curetage. (sp?). It is where they make your cervix dialate to 4cm and then go in and remove contents from your uterus. Usually it is done to remove fetal "products" as the docs call it.. or large blood clots that prevent the uterus from clamping down.

I have had one and it wasn't too bad. But I had mine to remove blood clots not from a miscarriage.

If you do have a miscarriage the doctors will general keep checking your hcg levels by blood to make sure it is out of your system. If it does not leave that is usually when they resort to the D&C. It is not automatically done just cuz.

Good luck! M/c are hard to deal with, I have been there and it is sad. Just remember your body didn't carry the baby for a reason. usually because there was something wrong with the fetus.

While most women need a D&C after a miscarriage, not all. I had a miscarriage 7 years ago, I was only 9 weeks pg and my body naturally got rid of everything and I didn't need a D&C. The biggest thing is the emotions, make sure you have someone to talk to.

well, speaking from experience they will first do lab work to determine alot of stuff, such as what is your hcg level (pregnancy hormone) if you have an infection, etc. Then they will do a pelvic exam to check out your uterus and make sure it is ok too. Then they will do an ultrasound to make sure all the fetal matter has been expelled. If all has passed, they will probably send you home with a prescription pain med to ease the cramping. If there is still evidence of fetal tissue in your uterus they will most likely do a D&C where they dilate your cervix and scrape out the remaining tissue. I went through the ER and this is what happened to me!

Dilatation and Curettage, Uterus Scraping...D and C is a procedure to scrape and collect the tissue from inside the uterus. If it isn't done you can get a serious infection. It is a method used for abortion but a miscarriage is called a SPONTANEOUS abortion... this means it was not done on purpose. All it does is cleans out your uterus of all the excess blood and tissue that built up for the baby. Just because it is done doesn't mean that you had an intentional abortion.

D&C is dilation and cutteration. It will be performed at the doctors. It is a method they use in abortions, where they vacuum the fetur out of your body.
