Honesty and Politics is like mixing Magnesium and Water

Because we were formed as a Christian country over 200 years ago. The "different races and religions" just started in the last 75-100 years, when the politicians started allowing everyone all over the world to immigrate here, thereby changing the face of our country. Not necessarily for the better either.

America may not be doomed politically, but it certainly looks doomed with all the stupid decisions made by politicians, both democrat & republican! If changes aren't made soon, we will no longer be Americans, but a mish mosh of all races. Foreigners coming here today are doing their best to change the "American Way of Life", to suit their own agendas. We are going down the tubes! America as I knew it growing up, is slowly being destroyed, certainly not getting better.

In this, the Communications Age, we are subjected to examples or charges of political corruption almost daily. The definitions of morality, ethics, honesty and lying seem to be under constant attack, and the definitions are ever changing. This is not a new phenomenon. It exceeds recorded history.

I have personally wrestled with the dilemma most of my life. How can I support, or even tolerate elected (and some appointed) officials with standards that are so opposed to mine. It isn't difficult. I have chosen to do nothing. I have never talked to a candidate running for any office; I have never contributed to a candidate and I have never asked any government official for anything. No candidate has ever asked for my vote and I have never voted.

The American people do not stand up and shout as much as they should when they do screw up, most politicans get away with their screwups unless it happened close to an election or some rich people advertise it. Everytime we see something in the news that is just worng, we should get more involved by writing letters and going to vote, a vast portion of our country does not even vote.

You cant find an honest politician because thats not what people want. An honest politician wouldnt tell us that interest rates are going to drop and that they'll cut taxes. An honest politician wouldnt be able to say that hospital beds will be replaced or that child care and money to schools is going to rise. They would have to tell us all the things we dont want to hear, and we cant handle this. So we continually vote in people that tell us all the false good news we want to hear.

a great question, but the answer isn't very encouraging. At least in terms of the U.S. right now (6-25-06),here are the main problems:

1) like another person said, money drives everything. Findamentally, a politico needs pretty huge amounts of money to run for office, to remain in office (as in elections), and to be effective in office (in terms of mounting effective "propoganda" to both be effective in his policy making efforts, and maintaining his image amongst the electorate).

Unless one's last name is Rockefeller or Kennedy, one doesn't usually have the "personal" financial assets to fuel a political career in any kind of independent fashion. I think a current U.S. Senator has to raise at least $10K a week, every single week, to sustain a "war chest" large enough to stay competitive.

How to get that kind of money? By and large, coporate contributions. And those donors ain't gonna donate to you, UNLESS they get something in return, one way or another.

2) More than any other time in U.S.History,the skills needed to "win office" have little or nothing to do with "ability to actually do the job."

Generally, the type of person who is great at "gladhanding" and the general superficial PR stuff that can get you elected, is NOT going to be great at the substantive, nuts-and-bolts heavy duty knowledge and intelligence to "run the show." It is like sales, in a lot of ways.

Generally, the "best salespeople" are that way because of "schmoozing skills," NOT because they know the technicalities, nuances, and in-depth nature of their product, or what the customer actually needs. Same with politicians.
