It comes from the fact that the "hypotenuse" of the two "triangles" is not a straight line segment. It is actually two segments of similar, but not equal, slope.

The red triangle has a leg ration of 3/8. The blue triangle has a leg ratio or 2/5. 2/5≠3/8 so the slope is not actually a straight line.
If you look at the top image very closely, you will notice (you have to look very closely) that it almost looks like it caves in (on the slope) slightly.
If you look at the bottom image, you will notice that it looks to bulge out (on the slope) a little bit. This causes the "mass" of the images to be concentrated in different places, and thus the second image needs a whole in it to compensate.

area of a right angle triangle with sides of 5 and 13 would be 13*5/2=32.5 squares.
Now count the area covered by the four pieces...
The two L shaped pieces have 7 and 8 squares.
The bigger triangle covers 8*3/2=12 squares
The smaller trianglr covers 5*2/2=5 squares.
So sum of covered area = 7+8+12+5 = 32 squares.
In other words the Big triangle - with the hole or without only looks like a triangle. it actually isn't.
Alternately check out the slopes for the two hypotenuse: 2/5 and 3/8 neither of which is equal to 5/13 ! :-)

This is an optical illusion. If you physically cut out each individual piece to measurement you will find that when you put the first model together, that you can not fit it together perfectly, there are gaps in it that are not there in the drawing. when the pieces are rearranged in the form of the second model, this empty space is combine into the vacant hole you see.

stick a ruler on the hypotenuse and you'll see that its not a straight line.
one triangle hypotenuse "bends" out while the other "bends in".
the two "triangles ae not triangles at all. they just look like them.
simple mathematics!!!

they are exactly the same size
i have even printed them out and me and the kids and the man spent 10 minutes messing around with cut out pieces of paper.
beats me - we even did two so that we could fit the cut out ones over the printed whole ones.
put me out of my misery - thought it had something to do with the way the light green and yellow fitted together...................
