and when was that? When did the Dodgers start and end in the Bronx?

At the time, after the 1957 season, the very popular Brooklyn Dodgers and the less popular New York Giants decided to move to California. The Giants played at the run-down Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, in northern Harlem. The Dodgers played in Flatbush which was then a neighborhood in transition from middle class to poor. Both needed new stadiums. The city of New York was not then willing to assist. Ironically, when the Mets were franchised in 1962 (they were not around in 1958), the city helped fund Shea Stadium, where the Mets played after 1962. The Dodgers played a couple of years at the LA Coliseum before moving to the current site at Dodgers Stadium in Chavez Ravine.

First off, they never called the Bronx home. They played in Brooklyn. They moved to Los Angeles after the 1957 season, and there are a number of reasons for their departure, the top two being immense opposition to a new stadium that was planned for downtown Brooklyn and that their owner, Walter O'Malley, was a major advocate of West Coast baseball.

And lil_bob, you're a fool. The Mets weren't around until 1962.

Money basically. They couldn't get the city to help them build a new stadium and when the Giants announced they were moving to San Francisco, the Giants owner Stoneham suggested to O'Malley that they Dodgers move to the West Coast with him, and they did. I think the Dodgers got the better end of the deal.

Their stadium was falling apart and in a bad neighorhood and they couldn't get the funding to build a new one. LA ponied up for the stadium so they moved. Plus there were 4 teams in NYC at the time. Attendance was down because of the competition.
