Typically a university will provide the following furniture:
*Bed
*Mattress
*Dresser
*Desk
*Hutch with light above desk
Some things that should be asked about include:
*Refrigerator
*Microwave
Most people will bring:
*Couch
*Fouton
I worked in University Housing for 2 years in the state of North Carolina. (Specifically NCSU).
Most housing websites will provide you with pictures of the room and a list of what to and not to bring with you.

A lot of colleges provide dorm furniture, so you should probably check with a Residence Life advisor before you purchase anything. Even so, most furniture leaves something to be desired, so padded mattress cover can come in handy and storage containers with drawers can hold many items the dressers can't fit (like toiletries). Due to space restrictions, you may want to look into purchasing or building a bed loft, which raises your bed to nearly the ceiling, but you can put a desk or small futon underneath.
If you're sharing a dorm, your school will get you in contact with your roomate before the end of the summer so you can discuss who will bring what items. They should also send you the dimensions of the room, which can be very helpful. One thing you may want is a small refridgerator. Even if the dorm has a public refridgerator, someone will always drink your milk and Mt. Dew. Trust me.
You will definitely need your own electronics like a computer and/or television, but sometimes, the dorm will provide a telephone. Free cable TV is usually provided (but don't expect HBO or Cinemax).
You may want to purchase an area rug because dorm rugs are notoriously gross. Don't get any clever ideas about hanging a shower curtain on your wall for decoration (like a mural). It's a fire hazard and the RA (Resident Advisor) will have you take it down faster than you can get lost on campus.
I've moved my sister-in-law in and out of a dorm room at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and let me tell you one thing -- Your dorm could be on the fifth floor or higher and there are no elevators for moving day. DO NOT OVERLOAD your boxes!!!! Your parents and friends may curse the extra trips to the car, but not as much as a computer box full of chemistry books.
I've been in dorms at University of Southern Alabama and Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. I've also been in dorms at University of Wisconsin-Madison. All of them have operated with providing furniture, but every school is very different, so surf the internet, call the school, and do your research. Being prepared doesn't only make you feel better, it saves you tons of cash! Good luck with everything!

It depends on the university that you are attending, and whether it is a traditional dorm or the apartment/suite style dorm.
The school that I attended, and friend's dorms have all varied to some extent. My university traditional dorm provided a bed frame/mattress. A built in desk was also included with a desk chair. This is pretty much the same for all dorms, with the exception of closets - some dorms have built in closets, while others have a wardrobe/chest type of piece of furniture.
I brought a several things, including another more comfortable desk chair (the wooden one provided was the least comfortable thing EVER). Also, I brought a night stand, but most dorms are designed to limit the space/size of the furniture.
-----
In the suite/apartment style dorms, most furniture is still provided. Bed frame/mattress, desk, chair, etc. You would have to bring your own TV stand if you plan on having a tv in your room. In apartment/suite style dorms with shared living spaces, couches, tables, lamps, and a small tv cart are usually provided.
hope that helps.

I would think some furniture, but not a lot. I spent 5 yrs in university dorms, and the main thing I brought each year was a fridge (small bar fridge).
Although I would think Desk Chair would be a good second piece. Perhaps a computer desk if had enough room, but most of them have enough (and depends if had a big bulky desktop like when I was in school, or a fly laptop, in which case, are probably good with your dorm provided desk).

Usually your dorm furniture is already there. The bed(s), desk, drawers, etc... However, you can bring almost whatever you like and give it your own style.
The pieces that most people bring (at least what I took to college), is a radio, comforters, sheets, television, microwave, food/snacks (microwaveble because most dorms won't allow you to cook in your room). But if there are some things that are questionable that you want to bring check with the dorm director.

My college provides some basic furniture, bed, dresser, desk. You will probably want some things like a TV and refrigerator to make it more like home, but I would not bring too much big stuff, as dorm rooms are usually TINY! I would suggest bringing basics, then if you find you need more stuff, buy it once you are at school and have settled in. Dont worry you will be going to the store anyways, as you will find out once you get there, there are always things you have forgotten.

It is very common for college students to bring their own furniture. Many colleges provide beds, & cpu desks, and some closet space, along with a dresser.
Check with your college as to what they supply & what they do not supply. Many colleges also have restrictions on what furniture you are able to bring.
My dorm room was not carpeted, some are (check with your college), instead of buying a small rug at wal-mart for 25-50 dollars, get the exact measurements of your room from your university and go to home-depot or lowe's and get the rugs that are off the rolls that they have. You can get wall to wall carpeting for about 20 dollars.
I'm sure their are tons of websites that have cool dorm room furniture ideas. Look around.
I went to Edinboro University of PA.

Yes, it's common to bring your own dorm furniture. Usually it is the smaller pieces--like chairs, lamps, small tables, foldable tables, and cube shelves. The dorms at the university I attend provide most of the essential furniture. You should check out the dorms your to stay in. Bring only what you need. You don't want to have to look for storage when classes end.

You could rent a loft bed instead of being assigned the regular beds, but if your dorm room is large enough, I say get a futon or pappasan chair. That's what I did. The desk and chair are included with a shelf or drawer of some sort. The two most common and important furnitures to get is a) a comfortable chair or futon because the wooden chair given to you is really uncomfortable and b) closet and room organizers because you'll have a small room with a lot of crap, clothes, shoes, books, and other condiments and stuff....

It depends on the school. Some schools will remove the furniture for you; other schools have storage spaces where you can keep unwanted furniture from your dorm room. They key is to get your stuff in the storage space early--they tend to fill up very fast on move-in day, and once they're full, they're full. The other key is to make sure you get everything back into your room in one piece when you move out next spring. Many schools hold students responsible for the items issued to your room, so if you move your desk out and it goes missing (or gets damaged), they may charge you. To find out your school's specific policies, I would recommend contacting a housing or freshman advisor. Your hall RA should also be able to help you with these kinds of questions.

Most of the time the bed, desk, chair, and a dresser are provided for you. Depending on large your room is, you could bring a chair or a futon. You could probably put all your own furniture in there if you wanted. You would have to store the dorm's furniture yourself and then put it all back at the end of the year.
