What physical buttons do you push? how does it hook up to the computer?

kinda like a keyboard.
what kind of synth do you have? you should be able to get a handbook/instruction booklet on what all the buttons do. it should hook up to the computer via a USB cord that should come with it.

Like a piano as far as making the sounds, but also like a computer to determine what the sounds will be.

Technically speaking you don't "play" it. You hook it up with a USB cable. Then select the instrumentation from it that you require for whichever composition you are running it with.
