1) Romeo and Juliet is set in Italy in the 17th century, WSS is set in new York City in the 20th century;
2) The two lovers (Romeo & Juliet) both die; in WSS, Maria survives to accuse society (providing a neat sum-up for the audience);
3) In WSS, there's a lot more singing and dancing;
4) The function of Friar Lawrence from R&J is fulfilled in WSS by Doc, the drugstore owner, except that he doesn't marry the lovers, and he provides no theatrically-convenient "sleeping potion."
The mechanics of the stories (as well as the theme of the pointlessness of feuds) are essentially the same.

Hi,
Basically, West Side Story is derived from Romeo and Juliette. Where Romeo and Juliette is a play, West Stide Story is a musical that incorporates, dialogue, song and dance. It is a contemporary story of young love that is not accepted by the lovers' families. In Romeo and Julitte, it was a class dispute between two high ranking families in Italy. In West Side Story, the love is between people of two ethnic groups.
I hpe this helps.

Well I like the the romeo and juliet. The names are different and the setting. And the way they dress. In west side story, he falls for a spanish girl, but in the other one she is not spanish. And the dance moves are different. The time it was created.

west side story deals with two gangs, the sharks and the jets, and they're the ones who are feuding. in R&J, its the families. WSS is more about like racism because one group is like hispanic and from puerto rico and the americans want them off their turf. they pretty much are the same though. tony is the romeo and maria is the juliet. they fall in love but cant ever be. people die, they get over it. end of story.

The original play was written by the one and only William Shakespeare; the movie was a Hollywood libretto that had good popular music, great dancing.. and a very romantic ending ( ok'd love between a U.S. white and a non- white....) That alone is enough ...

Romeo and Juliet didn't have all that singing and dancing (really annoying after a while).
