That's a broad question. :) There are some plants that just don't do well or produce the same plants as themselves from a cutting. For instance, roses, fruit trees and other plants that are grafted don't do well. You can tell if a plant has been grafted by looking at the base. Generally there is a large sturdy base with a knot-like growth that has a main stem or trunk coming out of that. Plants are often grafted to prevent or lessen problems with their growth, due to insects or disease.

In general, spring is a good time to take any cuttings. Take a 3 or 4 inch cutting from the growing tip of a branch. Remove the lower leaves from he bottom inch or 2 of stem. Dip the cutting in rooting hormone. It's available from the local garden center. If you get the powder, just dip it in for an inch or so. Place the cutting in moist potting soil in a pot with drainage, in a shady place. Keep the soil evenly moist. Water with a solution of rooting hormone once a week. In 2 or 3 weeks you should start to fell resistance if you pull very very gently on the cutting. This means that roots are forming and growing. Leave in the pot until roots come out the bottom if you've used a 2" or smaller pot. If the pot is larger, move the cuttings to small individual pots in about 8 weeks(2 months).

You need to put the clipping in water. Do not let the water evaporate. Best location to leave it is in a sunny room. Let it begin to root. About 3 weeks. Then plant it!!

put the clipping in some soil and it will grow roots or you can put the clipping in some water (just the stem not the whole clipping) and it will grow roots that way also then plant it in soil
