This is what I usually do (though I'm usually the one who's hurt and asking questions) ... try and put yourself in the person's position. If you were hurting like that, what would you like to hear? Would you rather be comforted or hear the truth?
Empathy works better than anything ... :)

Be supportive and objective at the same time, say things like in my opinion or what i would do, you don't want to force your way rather subtley suggest, but make them feel better through laughter and humor thats the best thing a friend can offer!

No; "white lies" are still lies. I tend to be honest, even brutally so. Comfort and respect are things that have to be earned.
Although I judge people all the time, just as all people do (those who say they don't judge others are liars), I usually keep the verdict to myself.

cry with those who cry, and laugh with those who laugh. Enter into your friend's hurt and situation. Cry with him/her. Be honest with questions, be willing to admit that you may not know an answer. And most of all just be there.
