Pap Smears are very important. They tell your doctor if you have cancer or not. And if you do what stage your in. A lot more women than you think do. Or at least are in the beginning stages of it.(pre-cancer) They can also tell if you have STD's or not. What will happen is they will ask you to take everything off (you will be left alone for this) and put on a paper gown, or a sheet. Then you will sit on the bed until the doctor comes back. The doctor will probably give you a breast exam. Checking for any abnormalities. Then the doctor will use an instrument that looks almost like a silver shoe horn. This does not usually hurt most women, but does feel very uncomfortable. The doctor will insert a long skinny wand like instrument that you will not feel go in at all. Then the doctor will use it to scrap the lining of you cervix. This collects the samples for testing. You have no nerve endings there so it will not hurt at all. It will just be uncomfortable mostly. Don't worry. It will happen so quickly. It only takes about a minute to actually have the pap.

I don't think you want all the details. But here we go:
A Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It's a simple test, but a very important one. During a pelvic exam, your doctor scrapes some cells from your cervix and puts them on a glass slide. At the lab, a technician looks at the slide under a microscope and searches for abnormal cells.
A Pap smear tells your health professional if you're at risk for cancer of the cervix or other precancerous conditions, called cervical dysplasia. A Pap smear can't tell you if you have cancer. If you have a Pap smear that's not normal, you'll need to have additional tests.
Remember to schedule the exam for a time of the month when you don't expect to have your period. Blood from your period interferes with a Pap smear and makes it very hard to read.
A Pap smear is done during a pelvic exam. A speculum is inserted into your vagina and opened so that your health professional can clearly see your cervix. There are two parts to it. First, a tiny brush is twirled in the opening of the cervix and rubbed on a glass slide. Then a small wooden spatula is scraped around the entire outside edge of the cervix. This, too, is rubbed on the slide. Your health professional then will send the slide to the lab for examination.
Many girls have a small amount of bleeding after a Pap smear. Don't worry—that's probably normal. Most health professionals' offices have pads in the bathroom for you to use after your exam. Feel free to take one. But if you're worried that the bleeding is not normal, talk to your health professional.
You probably won't even notice the Pap smear being done. You might feel a little bit of pressure when your cervix is gently scraped. It's also a bit uncomfortable to be in the pelvic exam position, with your feet up in the stirrups and your legs spread apart. But nothing should hurt during a Pap smear.

I'm an OB-GYN. It's just a test that they do to make sure all of the cells in and around your uterus are healthy. It can often be an early detection for cancer.
A doctor will feel the inside of your vagina and cervix by using his/her gloved fingers. If it is a Man doctor, there will be a female nurse in the room as well. Then they will take a long cotton swab and insert it into your cervix to collect some cells (the smear) it might give just a little bit of a quick cramp, but the doctor will talk you through and make sure you are comfortable. She will also warn you when you might feel the cramp.
They send the swab off to get tested so they can compare that next year in case the pill is giving you strange side effects. RARELY happens, but better to be safe...
Good luck Darlin'. They're not super fun, but we all have to do things to look after out health.
Cheers.

A pap smear (also called Pap test and smear test) is a medical screening test for early detection of cancer and other abnormalities in the female genital tract by sampling cells from the cervix with a swab. The cells are placed on a glass slide and checked for abnormalities in the laboratory. The test is simple and effective.
About 5% to 7% of pap smears produce abnormal results, such as dysplasia, a possibly pre-cancerous condition. Many of these abnormalities are not due to cervical cancer, but they are an indicator that increased vigilance is needed.
Depending on the guidelines of the screening program in a given country, it is recommended that all sexually active women have an annual or biannual smear test to detect any cancer in its early stages. If results are abnormal, and depending on the nature of the abnormality, the test may need to be repeated in three to twelve months. If the abnormality requires closer scrutiny, the patient may be referred for a colposcopy.

HI Veronica,
The Pap test is a yearly test that women should have every year - especially if you are sexually active or taking bc pills. Since BCs increase your estrogen levels in your body it is essential to have this pelvic exam to ensure not abnormal cells and/or cysts develop. The test is a bit uncomfortable - but not painful. It lasts 2 to 3 minutes. The doctor will swab your cervix area then send the results away to a lab for analyzing. It might sound bad but trust me its not - I have to get one 4 times a year because I had an abnormal reading on my last yearly.
Hope this helps.

A pap smear is when they insert a speculum (looks like a pair of vice grips honestly) to hold you open and then take a swab and get a sample of your cervix. This will tell them if you have any abnormal cells which could mean cancer or an STD. They are necessary to make sure everything is alright. It doesn't usually hurt, it's just uncomfortable.

A pap smear is where you lay down, naked, with a sheet draped across you and they stick this device in your vagina to open it up, the put a q-tip type thing in there and swab it, then they stick there fingers up there and feel around, sounds terrible but it's not that bad, it's very professional and doesn't hurt...

It's nothing to be afraid of - it just means they run something like a big cotton bud along the walls of your vagina so they can do some tests and check that you don't have any infections.
As long as you relax when they do it it shouldn't hurt but maybe tickle a bit... ;-)
