OMG guys thatnks for those answers but I'm not stupid. What is the name of the phenomemon? Why do we "feel" it? How do we know who it is that is staring at us even though we are strangers and may be in a crowded place?

OK, so according to one person you can't actually feel it...how then do you know in which direction to look to find someone looking at you? What gives you the prompt?

Um, when you look at someone you can see whether they're staring at you.

People can't "feel" when they're being looked at, contrary to popular belief. Experiments have shown no trace of this ability. In fact, if you can demonstrate this ability, you can win a million dollar prize from the James Randi Foundation:

You don't know where too look when someone is staring at you. If you happen to glance in the general direction where someone's looking at you, their stare will catch your eye and you'll look at the person. Then you may think you must have "known", when it was really just coincidence that you glanced that direction.

People can look at you from various directions all the time, and if you don't happen to turn your head and notice, you never knew it happened. So you never find out that the "feeling" failed you. You only notice when it seems to work, just by coincidence.

Like I said, investigators have done experiments to see whether people knew they were being stared at, and they couldn't tell. At all.

My guess is...

You're just looking for a pair of eyes that happen to looking in your direction. Basically you eliminated all the other people looking in other directions then you're down to those few faces looking in your direction. I'm pretty sure a person could notice a full face within their peripheral vision. Very unlikely you'll know someone staring at the back of your head. You'll especially know that person is staring at you, is when they react when you make eye to eye contact (looking away real quick or a smile etc.).
