Do not be afraid to contact a college coach inquiring about playing. That's part of their job.
Call him and ask if he is offering any "walk on" positions. Almost every college should offer at least one walk on.
Keep in mind that a walk on will not get scholarship money and most likely be red-shirted, but at least it gets you on the squad.
For schools outside of the NCAA (division II, III, NAIA), they always invite new talent. There's always a chance he'll want to look at you and possibly give you a scholarship as a recruit rather than a walk on.
Don't give up. If you want to play ball somewhere, call the coach.

Responding to the last post...... Division I, II, and III are all ruled by the NCAA, not just Division 1. In Division III, scholarships are unavailable, but in DI and DII they are. If you are good enough, you will make the team. Making the team isn't exactly the hardest part, its getting the playing time over those players who have the scholarships. Coaches love walk-ons, they love their effort and what they give to the team. However, they usually find it hard to give a walk-on a starting spot over somebody who the team is giving a 50% scholarship to.

if you wander the internet for the coach's address or phone #, you might be able to contact him.
