Yes, virtually all dorms come with furniture.
I know that Michigan State University offers storage for unwanted furniture items, so many students move in their own stuff - especially the beds, since they like to build lofts. Of all the campuses I've seen and checked out their dorms (just a few), they are the largest: a bit over 13x13 feet. No dorms I've ever seen look like the ones on TV shows.
Some schools offer housing in the form of apartments, but those are usually set aside for grad students and students with families.

I just finished my freshman year of college. The dorm I was in had stationary furniture. There were 2 bed, 2 dressers, 2 closets, and 2 desks. The room was very small. I had to share a bathroom with 28 other girls. Next year I am in about the same sized room but all of the furniture is able to move. If you get a loft for your bed, you can fit in your own furniture. Most of the rooms at the college I go to are small with their own furniture although they do offer apartments and a new building that has a 4 bedroom suite. Most rooms I think everywhere as a general rule are small. They are not like the rooms on Saved by the Bell the College Years or any of the other shows. There are exceptions however.

From my experience in college and a residential high school, dorm rooms typically come with a limited amount of furniture (a bed, desk, chair, set of drawers and wardrobe per person), with all but the wardrobes moveable as you like.
This is good, because while I'm pretty sure lots of colleges do allow some furniture, you're going to be short on space (so no, the rooms typically aren't very big), unless you live in a suite-style dormitory. Many roommates bunk their beds to claim space, and others find more creative solutions.
Make sure you check out the dorms you're considering living in before you making big plans that involve furniture, so that you know what you're working with.

I went to East Carolina University and stayed in Garrett dorm (Freshman Experience) for a semester. They only had doubles and we each had a bed, a desk, and a dresser. From what I know of other colleges (Western Carolina University) you can bring your own furniture and replace what they have as long as they get their furniture at the end of the semester. At ECU the rooms were small, as most dorms were, but we also had air conditioning, a sink, and a microfridge. If you look at your prospective colleges' websites, you can find info about the specific dorms, most of the time with room sizes and everything that is included in the dorm. At ECU's site, they even have virtual tours and floor plans.

As the mother of a high school junior, I've been taking a lot of college tours in the last few months. The answer is yes, most dorm rooms do come with furniture. Depending on the college, though, it might not be furniture that you'd like to live with.
Most of the dorm rooms I've seen are very small, espeically when you consider that two or more people who are probably used to having their own room, will be living in them.
The colleges I've been visiting have been in Michigan.

Actually, the other people are wrong - unless you are going to be placed in on-campus apartment style housing, all dorms come with basic furniture including a bed, desk, chair, dresser and either a closet or bureau. What you need to bring are things like rugs, decorations, sheets, pillows, blankets, towels....stuff like that. The residential life/housing offices of ANY college or uiniversity can answer this and all other questions you have about dorm life....so can students at the schools. Take a visit and ask around - people are usually happy to help. Good luck!

I've never heard of a dorm where you have to provide your own furniture. A lot of dorm furniture can be taken apart though, so you can either keep it in pieces in your closet and use your own things. You might also be able to arrange with whoever is in charge at the dorms to take it from you, that depends on the place though. Basically, all dorms come furnished, but you might be able to negotiate something with the people in charge to take it away from you.

Colleges vary on what furniture they provide in dorms, but as far as I know, they are required to provide at least a bed frame, mattress, and closet; most also provide a desk and a chair. Room size is usually fairly small, but depends on the college. If you don't want to use the dorm furniture, you are welcome to bring in your own, but you have to hang onto the stuff they provide, or they can charge you a pretty penny for it.
