There are varying degrees of acne. I have moderate acne, and my brother has mild(meaning less than moderate). Some people have severe acne. Proactiv works for mild acne. It is a topical treatment (cream/gel), and it cleared up my brother's skin...it's similar to over the counter products or if your dermatologist prescribed Retin-A or Differin Gel. People with mild acne don't have scars. I have a few scars, but I don't ever get the really big boil-like acne that people with severe acne get. Proactiv didn't really work for me and neither did Retin-A. My face had little bumps on it in some places, but I'd only break out with one or two "average-sized" at a time...this is embarrassing, but it was the acne on my back and chest that wouldn't go away. Antibiotics were what worked for me. However, I still used the mask from proactiv in the months before my acne completely went away because I like it. If I had a zit on my face, I would put the mask on overnight on that zit and when I woke up in the morning 8/10 times it was noticeably smaller or gone. My dermatologist recommended the Neutrogena mask. It works but not as well. It probably wouldn't reduce one of those giant pimples, but it does a normal sized one. Antibiotics should clear up most people's acne. Only people with the severest problems need Accutane. It is an expensive medication that some insurance co. will cover, but it has a lot of health warnings. One of my friends used it, and it completely cleared up his skin which shocked me because his skin looked horrible before. This is really long, but I just wanted to give my best advice. Peel off masks don't do much for me, but if you put an acne mask on specific pimples it will reduce them over night the majority of the time. Make sure you let it dry before you put your face on the pillow and sleep for at least 7 hours. Good Luck!

I thought acne was caused by something inside you, not a surface problem. I would think not but everyone is different. I have heard great things from people I know about proactiv. Also, my husband had bad acne as a teen and he had a doctor prescribe antibiotics which cleared it up. I guess it depends on the cause of the acne.

Try searching Google and see what you can find on some medical websites. Good luck.
