I like Americans, the ones i've met have all been friendly and good to talk to. Probably the one thing I admire about America is their sense of patriotism, the biggest and most memorable display of this was affter 9/11, the whole country united in grief but drawing stength from one another. It's something that the UK seems to lack & I wish we had just a little of what you guys have.
Carry on being proud of who you are my American friend, its what makes your nation great!

I'm an American too, and I think you've answered your own question. It is the perception of the World that WE ARE our government. In fact, we are a diverse people with very different opinions about the government that is supposed to serve us, and it's policies. I don't think America is represented very well by the Republicans, and this Republican administration in particular. How can a political party that represents the top 1% of the wealthiest people in our country, be representative of us all? I don't believe it can or does. I also don't believe for a moment, that the last two presidential elections were fair, and that the REAL representative government of the American ideals is the Democratic party. But, people in the world see the arrogance, elite-ism, and greed of the current administration and not the American people who I believe as a whole are honest, hardworking, caring, and compassionate. It is all in the perception of our government, and that is a national disgrace.

All my experiences with Americans have been very positive - but I think I speak for most British people when I say that we find the amount of religious extremism over there frightening. You only need to check out the questions and answers on this website to realise there are a lot of scary people over there. We don't have a Bible Belt over here, and Britain is pretty secular. I really hope my assumption that about half the USA are gun-toting anti-abortion/contraception rights Bush-voting non-passport holding insular religious fanatics is inaccurate.
All the people I've met have been very normal, but they've all been passport holders who travelled abroad.
I think most people actually like Americans, only stupid people would blame you for your government's antics.

I think they're great - they are really relaxed and more open about things - they love to have a laugh, and are generally nice (I better not be stereotypical though - every country has nutters in it!) I reckon America has a bit of a bad reputation because of people like Bush, and the fact that people are actually jealous of such an affluent country! ps I'm Welsh, do you know where Wales is??? (It's part of the UK but NOT part of England!!!)

Without wishing to be rude I have found a lot of Americans to be loud and overly confident with a huge reliance on the media. Saying that I have also found some who are the nicest people you could meet so just like anywhere in the world it all depends on the individuals themselves

Americans are a good bunch people but its our government who has decided not to listen to the people anymore and do what THEY think is right?? our 2 party system is broken and the powers that be will not let a THIRD party get in. we should have a raffle on who will run cities, states and the nation every 4 years!!! only people who get their names put it is, people who are born here and they can not have a criminal record and not ever been a lawyer or judge. look at that vast pool of minds that has not be corrupted by YEARS of DC. and a STANDARD set of laws that can not be changed for EVERYONE to abide by or pay the price with swift justus like it should be.

Americans are a bit to cocky. We believe that we are the wisest of all people, but that's crap. Most Americans can't tell you exactly how the president is elected. Americans also seem to think that they are deserving of something. We tend to think things should be handed to us when in fact we need to realize that hard work and sacrifice is the only reason we have what we do today. We need to be more appreciative of our own country and its freedoms, and more willing to work to defend these things.

I am a proud American as well My opinion is Americans are to helpful to other countries especially ones that won't help themselves. Americans also forget that there are other Americans who need help but we reach out to other countries instead of our own.. I love America and glad I am here I am proud of our soldiers but I believe it's time they come home to America where they belong.....Please don't take this wrong I just wish America would worry about America for a change......
