I don't think it's that they're afraid, but that they don't believe it's "right". They use the Bible as a reference, saying that a marriage is a union of man and wife. Or something like that. haha, I'm registered republican, but not really sure on this issue (I'm more fiscally conservative than socially conservative -- I vote the way I feel is right). With Conservatives, I think a lot of their beliefs stem from traditional Christian beliefs. Me, personally, I just believe in having morals, that is, treating people with as much respect as I can.

But if you're in love, it's not the government's right to tell you who you can or cannot marry (given that the person is not in you immediate family!).

I don't think the problem is just with "heterosexual conservatives" the fact remains that a large majority of American's are religious, and most religions are against Homosexuality. So as long as that remains true, I don't think gay marriage will be legalized. However, I do believe that there CAN be equality! Yes, it is possible in this case for both sides to be correct. If we changed the laws not to include Gay and Lesbian marriages, but made marriage a CERIMONY only and no tax breaks for being married etc... you could have equality. On insurance and other aspects of legal holdings to be divided can be completed by having a Will. The truth of the matter is that marriage should never have been a legal proceeding, it's that whole church and state violation, marriage is a church thing and should never have been state run... which has now brought us full circle back to the begging. To sum it up, seperate church and state, make marriages ceremony only. Then everyone could "Get married"!

I couldn't find the answer to your question but most likely conservatives don't think it is a fear, just an opinion that may not be worth their time to discuss on the internet. What did come up when I ran a search is a lot of response from Republicans and Conservatives that do support gay marriage. I'm assuming your question develops based on the latest news with the ban on gay marriage, and luckily this ban failed but will always be a debated issue for all parties. The sources I listed tell the reasons why some conservatives and republicans are in support of gay marriage, mostly due to their belief in not wanting to change our Constitution.

Homosexual behavior is not new on the world scene. Many of the Roman emperors were homosexuals. Such behavior is also mentioned earlier in the Bible in the book of Genesis in a case of cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. It is interesting to note in social history that whenever a nation allows family values to be undermined and sexual lifestyles contrary to that taught in the scripture there has always been... the eventual disintegration of those societies.
Two cases in point would be Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed by God, and ancient Rome which crumbled from within.

In light of what many playwrights, musicians, the movie industry, the medical profession and gay liberationists of our day are saying, it is time we ask the question "what is to be America's stance on Gay Marriage?"

What does God say? It seems that the Lord has given some very specific instructions which condemn the practice of homosexuality but which also holds out hope for the homosexual.

Romans 1:24-32
2 Chronicles 7:14

The future of America, our children and the marriage institution set by God, depends on if we choose to accept "the homosexual life style" or fight to keep God's will for America, the future of our children and marriage being only of one man and one woman..

As a heterosexual conservative, I'm baffled myself. The only thing I can think of is money (less taxes collected, more benefits paid out) but I don't see where the fairness enters into that equation.

Let me know what you find out!

This is a really good question that deserves a good answer. But I'm afraid I don't have one. The best I can do is that the conservatives are close minded.

We're not afraid of it.

Gays and Lesbians have the same right as the rest of us do:

WE ALL HAVE THE RIGHT TO MARRY SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE GENDER!

A gay man may marry a woman.
Just as a straight man may marry a woman.

A lesbian woman may marry a man.
Just as a straight woman may marry a man.

NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW!

Because to them, Gays are not equal. They are less than human, a scurge of society, therefore do not deserve equality. When it comes down to it, Conservitives believe that they are superior human beings, they "follow the word of the lord"; and Gays openly defy God's teachings and therefore cannot ever be seen as equal. It's bigotry plain and simple.

Marriage is a sacrament of the church. If we are going to keep state and church separate lets do so.A union outside of the church has always been a civil union straight or gay.Why not continue on with this solution

Because to them it represents the demolition of their so called "family values." Coming from the gayest area in the U.S. Personally (part of Ft. Lauderdale), I can tell you that gay families are no threat to America or any other country. The only reason they are so prominant in some areas is because other areas shun them.
