I'm doing a lot of core work lately and finding that it really helps me in longer distances - makes my inner shock absorbers happy when they've been properly trained before a race.

The yoga answer is a good one too - I don't do it myself, but I'm actually considering starting because of the running benefits.

Some really good non-running workouts that will help your running speed are Yoga and stretching. These will help make you more limber and flexible. The more flexible your muscles and tendons are, the better they will respond in competition. Most people neglect to stretch their muscles, or just do it briefly right before exercise. Try to do a stretching routine on a regular basis for 10-15 minutes at a time.

If you are talking about sprinting, yes. Plyometrics for your lower body can increase your explosiveness from the blocks.

But long distance running is about form and endurance, so run, run, run!

what we did in a class i took was aerobic exercises for at least thirty minutes a day... because you have to get your heart working... you can try step areobics (with some good music... of course), try wall sits increasing amounts weekly, or sit up, push ups, and all those fun things...
