in china they point at thier face, sometimes looks like they're pointing in thier mouth cause they say Wa? (me?) with an astonished look. This brings much amusment to the foriegn teachers here.

I think there are two likely answers there:
1. The chest is the home of the heart, once thought to be the center of the consciousness, the place that "me" lived.
2. The chest is the easiest main body part to which you can point. It is less effort than pointing to the head or any other part.

Because its considered to be the center of the body, the heart is in the chest cavity and its the center of attention, the person, their being lies in the heart, hence, point at the chest.
