It is quiet interesting you ask this question! I just completed a paper on rap music. I found that rap music is not liked due to SUBTLE RACISM and PERSONAL BIAS. Depending on your age and how you grew up I think would have an effect on why you do not like or believe rap is music. I understand that you feel the words are explicit and don't make sense at times. I personally love rap music. I also like Poetry which to me if you really take the time to listen to some of the songs, it is a poem spoken in a quick pace. This is just my opinions on rap music, but it is mostly not liked because some like yourself just do not like it! Others who were brought up around it or, are between the ages of 14 and 24 find that they enjoy it!

I would tend to agree with you. Technically it is music though. The definition of music defined by Encarta is:
sounds, usually produced by instruments or voices, that are arranged or played in order to create a pleasing or stimulating effect
OR
the art of arranging or making sounds, usually those of musical instruments or voices, in groups and patterns that create a pleasing or stimulating effect
So if you examine your question, this had a stimulating effect on you, so much that you decided to ask about it.
But how much "soul" is in this "music." To me rap is a very sterile and empty form of music. The movements and structure in rap are very simple and with nothing short (or more than) a 4/4 meter, no experimenting outside of the box with time signatures and song structures(or well written lyrics.) And actually, most of the beats are conjured up by a producer, engineer, or someone other than the "named artist." When is the last time you heard a rap tune and it brought back fond memories?
Rap has become a very POP oriented genre also in which The Hook is key.
Compare Rap to Blues and FEEL the difference. That Feeling... that is soul. And it is in tons of other genre, just not so much in rap. So to answer your question, yes it is music, however, it has become more of a device to feed greedy record execs tons of money and to drive a media/cultural based false "thug" image for many of today's youth.

Rap is music. Some might find this unfortunate, but yes, it is music. Even if I do not like Rap and Hip-Hop ... one must realize that there is still a lot of work going into making a single song. That counts for every single kind of music.

Mainstream rap is pretty bad. Underground hip-hop actually has a much better vibe, more originality, and is more palatable to the untrained ear. It's more like poetry, more like what rap should be. Unfortunately, listening audiences, for any genre, are sheep and listen to what everybody else does. Mediocrity prevails in most facets of life because of social pressure.

It is music. It's your opinion if you choose to listen to it or not. To children, the Ice cream truck is "music to their ears". To there parents, it means "get ready to open your wallet."
Lyrics to a song can make it or break. There are dumb lyrics in every Genre of music. The beat catches you but the lyrics draw you in.

Rap is just another form of dialect set to music...think Opera-it's not that different from each other really. What you are referring to
is "Gansta-Rap", a style that I personally do not like. Old-time
rap, the original is the best...in my opinion.
