I just graduated and I would really like to get a computer for College. I have a limited budget. Also, it wouldn't have to be something they are selling right now, if I could find it used and it's a good one, that would be ok, right? I just need to be able to email and write reports. Would I really want a laptop? Thanks!

having a laptop for college is probably quite useful as you can bring it to class or the library in addition to using it in your dorm room.

the best computer partially depends on where you are going to college, as you might want to get either a Mac or PC depending on what services the college you are attending has set up for either or both OS's - many colleges have special discounts available to students as well.

computers of all kinds are the sort of thing that you pay a premium for the latest and greatest, so buying used (or buying the less expensive new ones) can get you a pretty good deal too.
last year's top of the line computer is this years low end model.

CNET rated the HP Pavilion dv5000z Turion 64 (2.2GHz) highly. It's only $799 at hp.com. The down side was its weight. The HP Pavilion dv4000 was rated highly as well at $979. HP is a lot cheaper than Dell and just as good. What I like about HP is you can buy a PC with an AMD processor which is cheaper than Pentium. You can build a PC/laptop to your specifications on HP.com.

at the price that you can get a laptop today you really dont need a second hand one. you can get a new one for as little as $500 (dell)
make sure you have some word processor / spreedhseet app (most come with ms works that is free and very good) it must have an ethernet card and wireless network card, have at least 40Gig hard drive (preferably more) and 512MB Ram (preferably more). a dvd / CD-rom drive (preferably DVD burner)
trust me even though desktops are more affordable in college a laptop helps esp when researching in the library, doing presentations in class and ripping songs from friends :)

You gotta go for an Apple. Get one of the iBooks. Yes, you can find some piece of crap Dell for cheaper, but those things suck so bad. Depending on your budget, you can find an iBook used on-line or at various places. Better to get a used iBook covered in monkey-poop than a brand new Dell -- at least, that's what my mother always said!

well dell is pretty good jsut for the basics.. i'm in college and dell has worked fine so far for me but but for my friends thats another story. another one thats pretty good is the IBook by Mac. but i would suggest a dell if you're just gonna use it for the basics and if you're on a budget.
