Each of us is socialized differently. Some of us are presented with more gratification for achieving goals. How we feel about the gratification helps determine how hard we work toward our goals.Ambitious individuals have more/higher goals than others and the encentive to achieve those goals through immediate or deferred gratification in whatever form it might take.

Ambition is the internal drive. Some individuals are happy with where they are in life and their internal drive has slowed and made them feel content with their lives, other do not have the education or experience thus they are held back, those with ambition are always driven to do more where as those with limited amounts feel self fufillment. The internal need to succeed is driven in part by fufillment and by the almighty dollar some say but teh psychology of it all is that those who are deemed as being successful are alpha dogs the primal need to be better then the rest to get the pick of the litter for multiplication purposes.

I think it really depends on your childhood and the way your parents raise you. If your parents didn't strive to do anything good with their life then their kids probably won't either. But if they make something of themselves and push their kids to do good in school, etc then they will be ambitious too.
