I could never top this excellent answer that I received for a similar question (from YahooGuru4u), so I quote it here verbatim. Of course, I ruled out the answer "42."

"Darn you. You sucked me in with your question, then I get here and I see 42 is already taken. Now we really have to go on a trip and I'm without a towel. Well ok, let me see what I can come up with, shooting from the hip as it were. My best guess is that the meaning of life, the universe and everything is "MORE". The quest for more seems to be at the center of all living creatures. All organizations be they organic or manmade seem to be trying to get "more". The universe itself is expanding, so I am told. As for "everything" anything that should happen to get created instantly becomes part of everything, so even everything seems to crave more. Yes I think I'll stick with the answer "MORE". What? Wait, just a minute, my wife is yelling something from the kitchen...... (long pause).....Hello I'm back again. My wife says the answer is "LESS" She says life is always moving toward death which by it's very nature is less life. The universe is made up of a limited quantity of everything and it is being used up also, so you have less now than in the past, and as for "everything" Well since everything gets used, you must have less of everything now than there was in the beginning. So my wife and I will agree to disagree and say that the answer is:
More or Less, or possibly More and Less. I guess that's pretty much the same as 42 because 4 is more and 2 is less. I'm getting a pain just behind my left eye from all of this thinking. What!? Just a minute, my wife is yelling again!........ I'm back. She said I'd better get off this Yahoo Answers thing and come to the table if I want any dinner. I told her that I'll never have to come back to Yahoo Answers again because I just pretty much summed up life, the universe and everything. I'd better hurry if I want more to eat and less yelling. So long and thanks for all the fishes."

Happy Answering,

For me I think that life is an every day contest. You start in the morning when you first wake up. Did you first have enough sleep the night before, always important. Next eat something reasonably nutricious, to give your body some energy to begin your day. Then do whatever it is that you do, only with a little twist,ask yourself what you can do today not only for other people, but most of all what can you do for yourself, that will make you feel better in this great big world that you and I breath in. At the end of the day take time to relax either with your family or just maybe calling a friend, or talk to a neighbor, because without people like you and I there is no meaning of life..............

Well my college prof always said the meaning of life was 42. But I see some other people have the same idea.

Personally, I think that the meaning of life is what you make of it. Do you feel fulfilled and satisfied in your life? Are you content in the day to day stuff?

If you answered no to these questions, then your meaning of life is to change what you don't like and search for something that makes you fell fulfilled, satisfied and content. And hey, if along the way you help people and bring a smile to their faces, then you have made the world a brighter and happier place ~ all because you were trying to be you to the best of your ability.

Life is what you make out of it. There are many things you can take from it. A person that is homless on the street corner can be the happiest person ever. A person in a $10 million mansion could be the unhappiest person ever. The only difference between the two is their surroundings. Life is all about taking what you have around you and being happy with urself. Life is about innerpeace.

This is my favorite quote. The origin is unclear...some believe it's attributed to Emerson, others a poet by the name of Bessie Stanley:

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

The meaning of life is to leave a lasting effect on the environment around you. Whether you are a cell, an animal, or a human. Life is based off of what you do that effects those around you. Preserving yourself in those around you. Allowing you to almost be immortal.

The meaning of life is Three Fold, The first and most simple meaning of all life is to procreate and continue on your unique DNA in the form of progeny, this applies to all life from grass to squids to humans. The next level is to pass on your knowledge of the world to these offspring; this is shown in all "higher" forms of life, like monkeys teaching grooming, killer whales teaching specialized hunting techniques, or your father showing you his trade and you continuing on after he has passed. Lastly there is the highest meaning of life. This meaning is to do good and live a life of virtue in the pursuit of higher knowledge and spiritual communion with the divine in the hopes that your goodness and altruism will lead you to escape the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth and return to you rightful place with the creator.
