As has been mentioned before, the American Revolution wasn't fought over the fact that there was a tax. American Conolists had been paying taxes to Britain for years, but those taxes (and their amounts) were chosen by the Colonial governments. The Stamp Act was passed as a tax on the Colonies that was not approved by the Colonial governments, so the Colonista opposed the Act. The Stamp Act was quickly repealed but replaced by the Intolerable Acts (act passed by Parliament basically saying that America must accept whatever conditions Britain chooses to place on them). This is what started the Revolution. Afterwards, taxes remained relatively low, mainly manifesting as commercial taxes (sales, tarriffs, etc.) In order to support the Union War effort, Abraham Lincoln instated more taxes, including the Income Tax. Taxes are the government's only (legal) way of collecting money. This money is used to fund government construction, programs, grants, and other projects (wasteful or not, depending on who you ask.)

We fought over "taxation WITHOUT representation. At the time, England taxed the colonies but allowed no colonial representation in the English Parliment. Many believe that taxes were only a slogan to gain popular support.

Have you seen what Canadians, Europeans & Australians pay in taxes? We were fighting 'taxation without representation' during the 1700's where money from the colonies went to England. The colonists had no say on how the money was spent. Nowadays we have representation and our taxes aren't that high!

We didn't fight for independance due to taxes.. it was taxation without representation. Basically, the American Colonies were being charged taxes, but had no input in how the government was run. We are still taxed today, but everyone has the ability to vote on how the government is run.

yeah, why so many stinkin' taxes - you do everything for yourself, right?

maybe you're one of those people who shouldn't have to pay taxes because you don't need:
- access to the tens of thousands of miles of the US interstate highway system
- police or firefighters or emergency medical people when things go bad
- street signs, lights, and maintenance
- schools
- access to beautifully preserved and protected wild places
- buses, trains, planes, and subways (all heavily subsidized by taxes, by the way)
- cheaper oil
- cheaper food
- cleaner air, water, and soil
- a representative government

Wal-Mart and Halliburton could probably handle all these things if we'd just let 'em.

"over taxes"

It was "over" taxation without representation,

AND over the general feeling that a union of colonies could be, and should govern themselves rather than be governed from a monarch 3000 miles away.
