The fertilized egg implanted itself in the fallopian tube, before it descended into the uterus. The embryo can't grow there, and will kill the mom if not removed.

The term for this is an "Ectopic pregnancy". This is when the fertilized egg has attached itself in the fallopian tube (the tiny narrow tube running from the ovary to the uterus). The fallopian tube cannot stretch or expand with the developing fetus. This condition is very painful and very dangerous. If the tube ruptures, which it most likely will, the mother will bleed internally. She could possibly bleed to death if the proper care is not given. The fetus in this case cannot survive.

When the egg releases and gets fertilized by the sperm, it must travel down a pathway called the fallopian tube (youve got 2 of them) into the uterus to implant there and grow. Sometimes, the embryo implants in the tube by accident instead of the uterus. The uterus can expand over time to accomodate the growing baby, but the tube cannot. Thus, as the baby grows there it is a hazard to the mother, the tube can burst and cause all sorts of serious problems for the mom, even death. Thus, when the baby implants in one of the the fallopian tubes, the Dr's almost always go in and remove it (abortion). It would not likely be able to live anyway given where it is implanted and could cause death to the mother. It's called an ectopic pregnancy.

So, your eggs normally live in the ovaries. To get to the uterus in order to be fertilized, they travel thru the fallopian tubes.

Occasionally, sperm travel farther than normal, and will find an egg that's still in the fallopian tubes.

The reason this is a problem is because the tubes don't have the room to accommodate a growing fetus, as the uterus would do.

It can be very dangerous to the mother. It is also referred to as an "ectopic pregnancy". Check the link below for more info on treatment, etc.

It's called an Ectopic Pregnancy and it's very painful. This is a problem because if the fetus continues to grow in the tube, it won't survive. And also, the fetus could grow to the point where the fallopian tube will rupture causing internal bleeding for the mom. If caught in time, and Ectopic can be fixed with no complications.

It means it is an ectopic pregnancy, which is not natural and can be fatal to the mother. According to kidshealth.org:

"In an ectopic pregnancy, a fertilized egg has implanted outside the uterus. The egg settles in the fallopian tubes more than 95% of the time. This is why ectopic pregnancies are commonly called 'tubal pregnancies.' None of these areas has as much space or nurturing tissue as a uterus for a pregnancy to develop. As the fetus grows, it will eventually burst the organ that contains it. This can cause severe bleeding and endanger the mother's life. A classical ectopic pregnancy never develops into a live birth."

It is an ectopic pregnancy. It means that the baby is not attached to the uterus wall instead it is attached to the walls of the fallopian tubes where the egg is send from the ovary (the "holding cell" for all eggs) to the uterus. This can cause a lot of problems, including death, if it ruptures. The baby cannot survive in the fallopian tube because there is no way to grow and no nutrients for the baby which is why it attaches to the wall of the uterus where there is a blood supply to provide nutrients and room to grow. Here is a link about it.

It means that the fetus is developing within the fallopian tubes which lead into the uterus. This is also known as a tubal pregnancy. Not a good thing! can be life threatening to the mother. Normally surgery is required.

It is called an ectopic pregnancy. The fallopian tube, the place where the egg moves from ovary to uterus, is not strong enough or stretchy enough to grow a baby, and if the baby is left to grow there, it is possible that it could cause serious irreparable damage or even kill the mother. It is a very serious condition. Hopefully everything will turn out okay for your friend.

That's an ectopic pregnancy and can become very dangerous of the embryo is allowed to stay there... it can cause the tube to rupture and have massive bleeding. An ectopic pregnacy has to be stopped in order for the mom to be healthy... the baby cannot live in the fallopian tube very long.
