keystroke loggers come in two varieties-hardware and software. with hardware, you can inspect your personal computer for some unusual piece of hardware, like a box, small cylinder (about the size of a cigarette) or some other foreign piece of equipment that you didn't install. Software loggers are designed for stealth (of course, because the installer doesn't want you to detect it).

You should have a commercial firewall software product installed.

You should have your firewall enabled.

You should run anti-spyware software (free versions available are from Spybot, which everyone likes, and Yahoo has a spyware detector in it's toolbar, which doesn't install on all browsers). You should run the disk scan utility in each of these to inspect your entire computer. I do this weekly. Some people run some sort of scan every time they end an internet connection.

You should have all the latest software patches for the various software installations you have on your machine (e.g., if you have Windows XP, you should have the latest service pack, if you have Office, you should have all the packs installed, if you use other products like Adobe, or Messenger, you should have their latest patches installed).

If these software pieces discover something you are unfamiliar with (a piece of software) and recommend isolating or removing it, you should do so and reinstall it fresh if you need to.

There are one or two software commercial packages that can do a scan. I think spy sweeper is one. It is available at Sam's Club. Some products incorporate it in their own suite, like Symantec and McAfee.

The only thing you can do about it effectively once you've detected and removed is to change your passwords.

Get anit-spyware programs, anti-virus progrems, and anti-trojen programs, clean your registry, get a firewall, clean your history and your cookies EVERYDAY, get a REAL ereaser program that cleans unused space too (that way data that was temporarly stored like keystrokes is GONE), oh yeah and clean you're page file and your temporary files/folders.

That all should do the trick...
some programs I'd sugest:
ZA (Zone Alarm)
Anti-Vir
Spybot
Adaware
Peer Guardian
Ereaser
RegCleaner
