If its within the ability of someone to do so, certainly there is a question of obligation regardless of whether its fulfilling or not. If people just work jobs to have a job, but can contribute, why not then? On the other hand, someone may hate the work they do which contributes, so a regular job is more desireable....

Also contributing to the common good is subjective as to whether what they feel to be contrubiting...I am sure Hitler thought he had a great idea of the common good (extreme example)

Ideally. However, not all people can have such a job as some jobs are just jobs that have to be done regardless of the "contribution" to the common good.

If it is your priority to have a personally significant job that contributes to the greater good, then it is important. If you don't feel that your job does that but it is not important to you, then it doesn't matter. Some people do volunteer work that contributes to the greater good and have a regular job just to pay the bills, so their regular job may not be personally significant. It is all in the eye of the beholder.
