I'm almost 52 and have been painfully shy all my life. However, I find that when I am in a situation where I have more control, my shyness fades. I have also found that the first step is the hardest and I mean hard by a factor of about 100X.

Sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and step off the cliff, believe me it gets easier the more you do it.

The longer you wait, the worse it gets. You become older and older and you start being ashamed of being so old and still not having a girlfriend.

This problem is more common than it might seem.

The best solution is to start chatting online with girls, getting their IMs and chatting. Your college or university might have something like www.facebook.com where you can look for girls that you can meet with for real when necessary - and they are thouse you would just meet in class etc.

You will overcome shyness in this way.

And then just start acting. If you won't get one of your online "friends" to become your gf, don't wait for the girls to come ask you out - do it yourself. And if it fails, do it over and over again.

Don't be afraid. There is nothing to be afraid of.

First of all, remember that nearly everyone is actually shy. Thinking of this takes the attention off yourself and you can focus on helping the other person to feel more confident.

Try choosing the shyest girl you can find (as long as she's nice too)

You could try some counselling or read some self help books on improving confidence.

Good luck.

Join a club that appeals to you. It does not matter if there are no girls involved in the group. In time your confidence will improve and you may find yourself interacting with girls easier.

Not everyone is born to be outgoing in this life so don't worry a whole lot. Just a little self confidence though will go a long way.

There are loads of clubs to join, enjoy!
Good luck.

try to go to work in a public speaking venue, or at least volunteering to speak publically at some events locally. your local pbs radio station is probably looking for volunteers, dont be bothered if your not left leaning in politics. the experience with public speaking (on the radio in this case) would help with shyness tremdously.
