Caps is the number of times a player has played for their country. Before, players were actually given hats, hence the term caps. Now there are so many international games that this tradition is no longer kept alive.

its the number of times you have represented your country in international games,it comes from the fact ,when you represent your country you are awarded a cap it will usually have the date and opponents sewn into it ,ie Brazil v Croatia 13 - 06-06 you get to keep this as a momento of the fact you played . Sometimes players sell their caps for charity .
