Marriage in america is historically a religious event. However, the government has stepped in and created a contractual marriage. If we take the religious principals, morals and ideas out of our ideas of marriage, what is the basis to prevent two men or two women from entering into a marriage contract?

The reason that the government was involved originally was so they could collect $$ for marriage licenses...marriage is not historically a religious event. Daughters were given by their fathers to other men for good...i.e. horses, land, etc. The men who made the deal with the father hoped that she'd be a baby machine who would cook, clean, and give him healthy sons to work with him and then carry on the family name. Marriage, today is about finding someone who you hopefully want to spend the rest of your life with. There is TOO MUCH religious influence in government. Gays and Lesbians are no more immoral than heterosexuals. In fact, most pedophiles proclaim themselves to be heterosexual...explain that. As well, people interpret religion based upon how they interpret the bible...2 people can have 2 different interpretations of the same passage...We are all human, and should all have the same rights regardless of our sexual orientation...a gay or lesbian doesn't care that you are heterosexual...why should you care that they are not!!

Because the definition of "marriage" is the union between a man and a woman. Don't be fooled by people who claim the reason they want gay marriage to be legal is because they want to share insurance benefits etc etc. They already have that. Its called "civil unions". They can already have all the benefits any married couple are entitled to but marriage in name is between a man and woman. Period.

There is the issue that some people believe it goes against the laws of nature. It's not so much the gay marriage, it's when they, uhm.... express their love. Some people consider that when two gay men do that, it's sodomy and wrong.

Just because we have the freedom of religion, doesn't mean that our laws are "free from religious influence." Our forefathers were religious and our laws reflect a moral basis that supports their beliefs.
