There is a way to get over this fear. I refused to go on any rollercoasters until my freshman year in college. I went on a school trip to six flags, where there is a good amount of rollercoasters. I was absolutely terrified, but one of my new friends assured me that I would be ok. I still get a bit shaky and nervous when I get in line, and while I wait to go up the hill, but I survived. What you need to help you is a supportive friend or two that won't make fun of your fear. Don't be talked into or 'forced' to go on a ride, because if you **really** don't want to go on it, well you shouldn't go on it at all... However, if you're even slightly interested in trying out a rollercoaster, go for it, even if five seconds later you're terrified and want to back out. I found that keeping my eyes open helped, and screaming didn't really help... but talking to my friend who was next to me calmed me down...
I know that I won't go on those high towers that drop you to the ground, just because I don't like the elevator/freefall feeling in my stomach. You may not be able to like all rides, which is perfectly fine, but you may learn that you can enjoy some, like rollercoasters...
I hoped this helped, and have a great trip! =)

By looking at Alton Tower's rides you have nothing to worry about. All speeds are lower than 61 mph so thats pretty slow (by American ride standards) which means all heights are pretty low. Don't worry you'll have fun. Oblivion, Nemesis, and AIR are built by one of best coaster manufacturers Bolliger and Mabillard who specialize in extremely twisted, and smooth rides. Rita is an Intamin acellerator coaster also guarenteed to be smooth and exciting. I got my dad on an Intamin acellerator coaster here in America that blows Rita away at 120 miles per hour and 420 feet tall and he absolutely loved it (you don't wanna be out done by an old man do you? lol).
You will love it. I've personally ridden a Bolliger and Mabillard Diving Machine (the same brand as Oblivion and I loved it), I've also ridden a Bolliger and Mabillard Flying Coaster (same brand as AIR and loved it too), not to mention countless inverted coasters (same brand as Nemesis) and loved them too. The acellerator coasters (the Rita brand) are awesome too with quick accelleration.

Don't go on those rides. I like alot of rollercoasters, but there are some that scare me. I went with a group of friends once and rode a ride I was terrified of just because everyone else went on it. By the time I got off I was even more scared, started crying, and couldn't enjoy myself the rest of the day.

I agree with others who say to face your fear.
In addition, what I would do is ask your mates if they'd mind going on a rollercoaster that's slower /less scary and explain your fear to them. If they are true mates, they should be fine with doing that.
Hope this helps and you have a fun time.

Hi Chris.
I`m not sure if i can help you, but my daughter was scared of the same things as you are She was afraid of everything. One day she just did it. She took the roller-coaster together with me. The first time whit her eyes closed but the second time she open up her eyes. That day she took the roller-coaster 12 times. You and you alone must overcome this fear and when you have done it once you realize that it isn't so dangerous.

dear chris,
i also had a fear of things that go fast and high. i got rid of my fear by trying little things first. like rides that go fast but not to fast like the spider, then move to the octpus which goes fast and not to high. the trick is to try i never knew how much fun i was missing out on cause i didn't try

If I was you, I would go but start on the easier coasters like the ones that have no loops, but moderately fast. Go on it, and see how you feel afterwards, if you feel exhilerated and brave next go one that is faster and maybe a few TWIST (not loops). See how you handle that....basically EASE yourself into the more faster and loopy coasters.....believe me you will get to the point where you can handle them, I know, I WAS just like you when it came to roller coasters. Now I LOVE them the scary the better.... :-)

Well, you can stand in line with your friends until it is time to board, then stand aside and wait for the ride to end and then continue hanging out with them. The only way to get over this is to face your fear and do the action until you are not scared of it.

If you go on it, don't think about it when your in line. Try to talk to some of your friends and get your mind off of it so the fear doesn't take you over. When your on the ride, sit with one of your friends so they can help you with your fear. It will be better if your with one of your friends.

wow... i'm the same way too. I usually stay away from amusement parks because i am so terrified of rollercoasters. but if i do go... i get on the little rides that aren't so scary looking and then slowly work my way up to the bigger rides.
