The best way to do it is find your boss' weaknesses and help compliment those.
Example: At my work just yesterday, a group of people were complaining about how the Lead does not assign the job rotations properly and is horrible with paperwork.
If I cared about my job and had the desire to move up, I would use that to my advantage instead of complaining. I would offer to assist him in completing the rotations and help with the paperwork.
It shows that you are taking initiative without trying to look like a brown-noser and that you care about the company.

Do your job. Do it well. Do it without whining. Do it with a smile. And then start relieving your boss of some of his or her burden by volunteering to take the lead on some projects.

oral for your boss.... seriously though. Its not enough to do your job well .... I wish it were. Find out what impresses your higher ups and impress them.. Sometimes it's stellar work pperformance... but most often it's your golf game, your watch collection, your old college major, or your stock portfolio, or some other absurd non- work related type thing...

do more than is required, do the job before the boss asks you to do it,stay late to do extras,do not ask for higher pay,let them notice you instead, be the first one there and the last to leave,
always be on time, and let them know you are available if they need you
