If it's a short story, you'll probably want to submit it to a magazine that publishes short stories. You can check Ralan's Webstravaganza (a website) for some listings of magazines that you may want to submit to (depending on the genre of your story). You can also consult Writer's Market (a book and/or website).

Get yourself a copy of the book Writer's Market (it's in the reference section of your library) and check out the category "short fiction" for places and instructions on how to submit your story to be published somewhere. Make sure you put it in the proper format requested--most publications will not accept anything in the incorrect format. Also, include a Self-Addressed Stamped envelope for it to be returned in case they don't want to read it, and prepare yourself for a lot of rejection.

It's part of the writing life. Write, but before you submit, research your market, your options and make sure you get a good copy editor!

Get a book called Writer's Market. If you don't want to buy it, the library will have it in the reference section. It's a list of publishers, how to contact them, and what type of work they publish, also what they pay, if anything.

Before doing anything, try to research about self-publishing or e-publishing. Try visiting the site mentioned below for tips, articles, and guides about self-publishing:

You can self publish, but you are better off trying to find a magazine or e-zine to publish your story.

Before you do anything check out this website: http://www.sfwa.org/beware/epublishers.html

There are a lot of untrustworthy places out there. Be very careful before you do anything with your work.
