I have been on the Pill for about 4 years. I am not sexually active -- I take the Pill for my acne.
I am getting married in October, and do not want children for AT LEAST 5 years... what type of birth control is the best?
I'm afraid that I won't remember to take my pill at the exact same time everyday - and end up pregnant. My friend says that an IUD would be good -- no hormones, can be left in for 5+ years.. but I'm not sure.

What has/hasn't worked for you? What do you suggest?

I like yasmin or the patch. Yasmin is a pill but if you don't take it that day then you can take two pills the next day. With the patch you put it on the begining of the week and take it off the end of the week and replace it. I think they are both great.

IUDs have a string that hangs down into your vagina, making it possible for infections to enter the cervix (so doctors don't like to recommend them). I suggest the Nuva Ring. You put it in for 3 weeks and take it out for one, then insert a new one. If you use tampons the Nuva Ring is for you. There is less to forget, than with the pill. I don't suggest the Depo shot. It really messes up the female system. If you stop taking the Depo, if perhaps you want to have a baby, it may take up to a year for the drugs in the Depo shot to wear off. The Nuva Ring also doses less drugs and it goes straight to the organs it is meant for. My friend who is very sensitive to drugs, could not use the pill or the shot, but she could use the Nuva Ring (without significant side effects). After you have a baby, if you plan to wait up to 5 years, I would check out Morena (an IUD with hormones). I would check out the Nuva Ring's (and other contenders on your list) website if I was you, to clear up any doubts you may have. The only other method I would suggest is Natural Family Planning (if your partner is willing to abstain from sex a week plus the week of your peroid) if your cycles are normal. This is the best way because you have no side effects from hormones (let alone all the risk factors), but my husband can't control himself, so I am sticking with the Nuva Ring. After my next child (I have 1) I will probably go with Morena.

Well...lets start by saying I don't believe any birth control works! I have 3 children myself. My oldest child was concieved with a condom, my middle child was concieved with the pill and my third child was concieved on the shot. (Deproprevera). So in my out look..none work..lol..the only thing that has worked thus far is a Tubal. Abstinence is 100% effective..but is not an option in marriage I know :) Your best bet would to be to talk to your Gyn and see what answers he/she can give you as to what is best for you...you have to take into account..do you smoke, drink, health concerns and so forth...For many women Depo is NOT a good choice. There are many sideeffects to it..such as...Increased wieght gain. But also has some nice ones like no period! or It can make you have a period 2 or 3 times a month...just have to go with what will suit you best with your body...Ask your Gyn..and get as much info as you can before you make a desicion.

I have an IUD and it's great. NO real risk of side effects except it might come out and believe me you'll know if that happens. Don't go with the shot..tried it and found out that it destroys your bone mass and takes two years to rebuild for every 1 year your on it. Pills caused me to have migraines and sometimes you forget. So go with the IUD its simple and you don't have to worry about it for 5years or 10 if you go with that one.

An IUD can be e very good choice for someone in your circumstances, and a patch or injection of birth control hormones work well, too. While they do contain hormones to consider, they also can sometimes be helpful with control of your menstrual cycles (including pain, and lessening flow length and time), and even with skin blemishes.

Best, honestly, is in the body of the beholder - to play on a phrase. for me it has been the Yasmin BC pill. For my best friend, it has been condoms and taking her basal body temp each day (you have a dip when you ovulate, then a spike until your cycle; they abstain for a few days before/after that dip). if you have a good relationship with your OB, they're the best person to answer this question; if you don't, find one you can get a good relationship with and then ask. Your OBGYN will be VERY important to you when you decide to have children.

Good Luck!

The Depo shot. Don't have to worry about taking a pill every day.

IUD's work well for this long term pregnancy prevention, also consider the depo provera shots, which are given to you every 3 months, i think...double check with your gyno, though! and congrats on the marriage!!!
